From production to development

The role of a software editor is also to plan for future developments. This often leads to incremental improvements and sometimes to more significant revisions.
When preparing the J2S concept in 1999, we identified the need to rewrite the software every 3 years.

After rewriting Simple Brief, our InDesign Server-based railroad, we decided to completely rewrite Simple MOM, the Simple Workspace application whose vocation is to manage data to be published, whether it is offered to be prepared for a catalog and/or a website, editorial content to be formatted, or even photo order tracking 1.

Seeing products through their own image

After analyzing the needs of our customers and leads, we started to upgrade our production solution by adding design support tools to it.

The boundary between a DAM and a PIM is not always obvious. Isn’t a product sheet an asset? At J2S, we consider that the asset sheet in a DAM must manage data in a neutral way, independently of the communication media that will use it.
Our Simple MOM is designed to manage the data to be published with its powerful multiple workflows. We decided to implement a new view to present data and sources.

The “List” view has been improved to display the product thumbnails directly in the grid.

A new display mode is now available. A thumbnail view of the product sheets and sources can be activated using the button in the toolbar, to facilitate the design of offers. A field of type “image” present in the structure of the form is sufficient for the list of products to be displayed in the form of a grid of thumbnails as in Simple DAM.

This way, the art director responsible for the offer to be published can quickly browse the thumbnails to choose the available product references according to the current trends before associating them with an offer.

Product sheets and information sources dedicated to your needs

Simple MOM works like a data hub that reconciles sources from different origins to build product sheets ready for publication.

The concept of “multi” has been taken a step further: several record structures and/or sources coexist within the same Simple MOM application. This has always been the case, but the new version of Simple MOM presents them more clearly.

As a reminder, data from an ERP can coexist with data from a PIM or a price management system to be aggregated in the form of a product record according to the criteria to be defined.

Simple MOM offers several types of records in the same window. For example:

  • Product sheets created automatically or not from the sources with very flexible description structures,
  • Offer sheets that group selected references around a background image to present the components of a trip, for example.
  • Asset cards are designed to make available a set of visuals chosen specifically for a publication.

The multi-side is also implemented in the context of magazine production where four types of cards are used: cards connected to the “content fragment” and “assets” of Adobe Experience Manager, and native Simple MOM cards to carry ads on one side and planning elements on the other.
